Automotive PCB Quality Requirements in Production

An automotive customer buys a board that has to work for the life of a vehicle, and the quality system that supports it is part of the product rather than an administrative layer on top. The requirements are written into the drawings, the process and the records, and an auditor follows the same path a defect would.

What the Standard Actually Requires

The automotive quality standards require a documented process, a defined change control, measured capability on the critical characteristics and traceability from the finished board back to the material lots. Each of those is a practice rather than a certificate.

Special and Critical Characteristics

The customer designates the characteristics that matter to the function or to the regulation, and those characteristics are controlled differently from the rest. They are measured, their capability is calculated, and any change to them requires approval.

Change Control and Notification

A change to a material, a process or a supplier is a change to the product, and it requires notification and approval rather than a note in the file. The requirement exists because a change that looks trivial from inside the shop can alter a characteristic the customer has qualified.

A laminate substitution, a plating supplier change and a mask chemistry change are all examples. The discipline is a written notice before the change rather than a report after it.

Traceability has to reach the material lot and the process parameters, and it has to be recorded at the step rather than reconstructed afterwards. A board identifier that links to the drill, the plating, the lamination and the assembly data is what makes a recall precise.

Reliability Verification

The customer requires evidence that the product survives the environment, and that evidence comes from a qualification plan: thermal cycling, thermal shock, vibration, and a moisture sensitivity test for the assembly. The plan is agreed before the first production run.

Records and Retention

The records have to be retained for the period the customer specifies and they have to be retrievable. A record that exists in a system that cannot be searched has the same value as no record.

Retention is also the reason the records are structured rather than free text. A parameter that is recorded in a known field can be compared across batches; the same parameter written into a note cannot.

Audit Readiness as a Practice

A shop that is audit ready all year is a shop that runs the system rather than preparing for the visit. The practical test is whether a defect found today can be traced to its cause today, without a project.

Where that test fails, the gap is usually in the records rather than in the process, and closing it is cheaper than the containment that follows a defect that could not be traced.

Process Control and Verification

Reviewing the design before the data is released is cheaper than correcting it after the panel is in the tank, because every step downstream inherits the decision made at the front end. Documenting the assumption is part of the design work, and a short note on the drawing prevents a question that would otherwise arrive a day later and cost a day of schedule.

The process window is set by the narrowest step in the flow, so an improvement anywhere else shows up as margin rather than as yield until that step is addressed. A short note on the drawing about handling, storage or packaging is often worth more than an extra decimal place on a tolerance.

Where a value sits close to a process limit, the drawing should say so, since the shop can then open the process window rather than working to a nominal figure that carries no tolerance.

Checks Before Release

The checks that matter are the ones performed on the product rather than on a sample kept for the purpose, because a coupon that travels with the panel is the only evidence about that panel. Where a requirement can be measured, it should be measured at the point of manufacture and recorded against the board or the lot it applies to.

A parameter that is set once and never re verified drifts, and the drift is usually discovered by a defect rather than by the record. The tooling, the material and the profile form one system, and a change to any of them should be assessed against the other two before it is released.
