Legend Ink Curing: 4 Checks Before the Boards Ship

Legend ink curing is the step that turns a printed marking into a permanent one. The ink arrives as a paste or a liquid with a solvent or a photo-initiator system, and it only becomes a hard, bonded print after it has been cured on a defined schedule. A legend ink curing step that is set by the oven dial rather than by a measured profile is a guess that happens to work until the panel mix changes.

The step is easy to underestimate because the print looks finished the moment it leaves the screen. A board with a soft or under-cured legend looks correct at the final visual check and then fails at the assembly house, where flux, cleaning and handling remove the marking that the drawing requires.

What Legend Ink Curing Does

In a thermally cured legend the heat drives off solvent and cross-links the resin system into a hard film that bonds to the solder mask beneath it. In a UV-cured ink the reaction is triggered by light of the right wavelength, and the cure is almost immediate. The chemistry of the ink decides which mechanism applies, so the ink and the curing equipment are chosen together.

The two systems fail differently. A thermal ink that is under-cured stays soft and smears; a UV ink that receives too little energy stays tacky on the surface even though its bulk has reacted, and the marking then picks up dirt or lifts.

The Cure Schedule and How It Is Set

The cure schedule is a combination of temperature and dwell, and for a conveyor oven it is expressed as a profile rather than as a single set point. The panel has to reach the specified temperature and stay there long enough for the reaction to complete.

Setting the schedule means measuring the panel, not the oven. A thermocouple or a profile board run through the oven shows the time at temperature, and it will show that a heavy panel lags a thin one by a margin that matters. Oven loading changes the profile as well, because a fully loaded conveyor carries more heat away than a single panel. The same discipline applies to other curing steps such as solder mask pre-cure.

Pencil Hardness and Surface Cure

Pencil hardness is the usual shop-floor check on the cured print. A pencil of defined grade is pushed across the ink at a fixed angle, and the hardest grade that does not cut the film describes the result.

The test is comparative and depends on the operator and the pencil used, so the grade, the angle and the load all belong in the procedure. It says most about the surface of the print, which is where handling damage begins, and least about the bond to the board underneath. A legend ink curing check that relies on a thumb rather than on a defined pencil grade is a habit, not a record.

Adhesion and the Tape Test

Adhesion is checked by pressing a defined tape onto the cured print and pulling it away, then examining what remains. Lifted or torn marking means the ink has bonded poorly to the solder mask or to the laminate. The tape should be applied with a defined pressure and removed at a defined angle for the result to be comparable between operators.

Poor adhesion has three common sources: a mask surface that was contaminated or not fully cured, an under-cured ink, and a cure that was run too hot so that the ink skin formed before the film cross-linked. Each is corrected differently, which is why the tape result alone is not enough to identify the cause.

Solvent Resistance and Cleaning

Solvent resistance is the property that decides whether the legend survives the assembly process. A cured print is rubbed with a defined solvent on a defined cloth, and the number of rubs before the ink is damaged gives a comparative measure.

The specification should reflect what the board will actually meet, which may include alcohol-based flux residues, aqueous cleaning chemistry or both. A legend that passes a mild rub test and then dissolves in an aqueous cleaner was qualified against the wrong process. Where the assembly process is not yet fixed, the safest choice is to qualify against the most aggressive cleaning chemistry the customer permits.

Over-Cure, Discolouration and Bleed

Over-curing is a real failure, not a safety margin. Excessive heat yellows lighter inks, drives the ink into the solder mask so that the print spreads, and can distort the panel itself.

Bleed is the visible symptom, where the edge of a printed character loses definition because the ink has flowed outward. On a fine legend the effect can close the gap between characters until the marking becomes unreadable, and the damage is not reversible. Handling before cure also transfers oils from gloves, which later appear as patches of poor adhesion.

Handling Between Print and Cure

The window between printing and curing is part of the process. Ink left on a panel for too long before cure can absorb moisture or pick up contamination, and the print then cures with a defect built into it.

Panels should move to the oven or the UV unit on a defined interval, and the same interval should be respected when the line stops for a break. The general rules for hold times between wet steps apply here as well, and they are described in hold time between process steps.

Process Setup and First Article

The print is a system of screen or stencil, ink viscosity, squeegee pressure and cure, and a change to any one of them changes the result. Ink viscosity in particular moves with temperature and with the solvent that evaporates during a shift. Screen tension and squeegee condition also affect how much ink the print carries, and therefore how the cure behaves.

Records and Release

The record should carry the ink identity and batch, the cure profile, the hardness result and the adhesion result for the lot. Where the legend is functional, such as a reference designator used in assembly, the result should be treated as an acceptance criterion rather than as a note. The record is what allows a customer to see that the marking was controlled rather than merely inspected.

Tying the marking to the lot also makes a later complaint traceable. Reference methods for the tests are published by IPC, and they are the fairest basis for agreeing acceptance with a customer.
