Fab Chemical Shelf Life: Labels, Dates and Stock

Shelf life is the period a chemical can be kept before its performance is no longer guaranteed, and in a PCB fabrication shop it is quoted on the label, in the certificate and in the process specification. The dates matter because plating, etching and imaging chemistry all change while it sits, sometimes slowly and sometimes not. A product that was in specification when it was delivered may not be when it is finally opened.

The risk is not usually dramatic. An aged etchant may still etch, and an aged resist may still coat, but the results drift in ways that are hard to trace back to a drum that has been sitting in a corner. Managing shelf life is mostly about making sure the older material is used first, and that the label tells the truth.

How Chemical Shelf Life Is Set

The supplier sets shelf life from accelerated testing and from experience with the chemistry. Some products are almost stable for years, while others, including some peroxide based and some biological systems, are much shorter lived. The figure on the label assumes storage under the conditions the supplier specifies, which is why those conditions are part of the number.

Two dates often appear, and they mean different things. The manufacturing date and the expiry date bracket the period of guaranteed performance, while an open date is added by the user once the container is first opened. For products that are affected by air or moisture, the open date is the more important of the three.

Reading the Label and the Date Code

A chemical label should carry the product name, the concentration or grade, the lot number, the manufacturing date and the expiry date. The lot number is what allows a whole delivery to be traced if a problem appears, and it is the first thing a supplier asks for. A container without a legible label should be treated as unknown and removed. A label that is faded or unreadable is a reason to quarantine the container.

Partly used containers are the weak point in most systems, because the original label may be on a drum that has long since gone. A shop rule that requires a secondary label on any decanted container, with the product name, the lot and the date opened, closes that gap. Storage Conditions That Change the Clock

Temperature is the biggest single factor, and a store that swings with the seasons will shorten the life of some chemistry considerably. Direct sunlight is worse, because a drum that is warm on one side will separate or stratify over time. Freezing can be just as damaging, since some products separate irreversibly.

Ventilation and segregation matter for safety as well as for quality. Acids and oxidisers stored together are a risk, and a spill in a shared store can contaminate material in a neighbouring drum through vapour alone. The store layout should follow the compatibility groups rather than the alphabet.

Stock Rotation in Practice

Rotation means the oldest material is consumed first, and it works only when the same rule applies to everyone who takes anything from the store. A simple two row arrangement, with new deliveries loaded behind the older stock, does most of the work without any paperwork. Anything more complicated tends to be ignored on a busy shift.

The rotation rule has to include returns, because a container that is taken to the line and brought back is no longer new stock. Returned containers should go to the front of the queue with their open date visible. Expired material that is found at the back of a shelf is the usual sign that rotation has stopped working.

Signs That Chemistry Has Aged

Visual changes are the first evidence, and they are worth teaching to the people who handle the material. Colour shift, cloudiness, separation into layers, sediment and a change in viscosity all suggest that something has moved. Crystal growth around a cap can mean the container has been open to air and has absorbed moisture. Both are worth a quick look before the container is carried to the line.

Some changes are invisible, which is why the date on the container carries more weight than the appearance. A clear liquid that is past its expiry date may still be perfectly usable, or it may be at half strength. Only a test can tell the difference, and the test costs less than a spoiled batch.

Expired Material: Test, Use or Dispose

Some chemistry can be requalified, and the decision should be made by the process owner rather than by whoever finds the container. Requalification normally means analysis against the specification, and it may also mean a small trial on the line. If the result is inside specification, the material can be released for use with a new expiry date.

Where requalification is not practical, the material becomes waste. Waste chemistry has to go through the site disposal route and must not be poured to drain, since a drum of spent etchant is not a rinse. Disposal routes are described in the PCB waste treatment and recycling notes.

Small Containers, Decanting and Labelling

Decanting into a smaller container is common and it is also where most date information is lost. The person doing the decanting should label the new container at the moment of filling, while the original label is still in front of them. A label written later from memory is a label that will be wrong. The bench where the decanting happens should be clean and uncluttered.

Small containers also age faster, because a partly full bottle has more headspace and more contact with air. Where a product is sensitive, the smallest practical package is often a better buy than a large one that will be half used. The storage and handling rules for the whole chemical store should be written down and posted at the door.

Records and Verification

The record should carry the product, the lot, the quantity received, the date received, the expiry date and the date opened. Taken together with consumption, that record shows how long material really lasts in the shop and whether the ordering pattern is producing waste. A store that cannot produce these figures will always hold more expired stock than it expects.
