About AI Edge Computing PCBA Project
This project involved the development and production of a compact AI edge computing board designed for real-time data processing and AI inference directly at the device level.
The system integrates a high-performance processor, memory, storage, power management, and multiple communication interfaces into a compact PCBA. The design required reliable high-density assembly, stable power delivery, thermal management, and consistent production quality.
Kingda supported the project from PCB Manufacturing and Components Sourcing to SMT Assembly, Functional Testing, and Final Inspection.
The customer needed a reliable PCBA platform for AI edge applications where data processing had to be performed locally rather than relying entirely on cloud computing.
The board needed to combine computing performance with a compact form factor while maintaining stable operation under continuous workloads.
Project Type: AI Edge Computing PCBA
Application: Edge AI / Intelligent Devices / Industrial IoT
Production Stage: Prototype to Low Volume Production
Assembly: SMT + Through-Hole Assembly
Testing: Functional Testing + Final Inspection
Key Project Requirements
The AI computing board involved several engineering and manufacturing requirements:
- High-density component placement
- High-performance processor and memory devices
- Stable power supply and power management
- Multiple communication interfaces
- Compact PCB design
- Thermal management for continuous operation
- Reliable soldering of fine-pitch components
- Functional testing before shipment
- Consistent quality across production batches
These requirements made process control and engineering review particularly important before production.
Engineering Review
Kingda reviewed the PCB design, BOM, component specifications, PCB stack-up, and manufacturing requirements before production. The engineering team evaluated component footprints, fine-pitch devices, component availability, lifecycle status, sourcing risks, SMT requirements, and functional test requirements to identify potential issues before production.
Component Sourcing
For the edge computing board, Kingda reviewed high-performance processors, memory, storage, and power management components for availability, lead time, lifecycle status, package specifications, and approved alternatives. Potential supply risks were evaluated before purchasing to support stable production.
PCB Assembly
After PCB manufacturing and component preparation, the boards entered the SMT assembly process, including solder paste printing, SPI, SMT placement, reflow, AOI, DIP assembly, and inspection. Special attention was given to solder paste control and placement accuracy for fine-pitch and high-density components.
Functional Testing
After assembly, the PCBA was tested according to the project requirements. Testing covered power-up verification, communication interfaces, processor and memory checks, peripheral interfaces, firmware programming, and functional operation to identify potential assembly, component, or electrical issues before delivery.
Quality Control
Quality control was implemented throughout the manufacturing process, from incoming inspection and SPI to AOI, X-Ray, DIP, functional testing, and final inspection. Inspection and testing records can also support production traceability for critical components and assemblies.
Project Outcome
The completed PCBA provided a compact hardware platform for edge AI applications, integrating computing capability, connectivity, and local data processing. By combining engineering review, component sourcing, PCB manufacturing, PCB assembly, and functional testing within one workflow, Kingda helped simplify supplier coordination and improve production control.
Why Kingda for AI PCBA?
AI hardware projects often require more than standard PCB assembly. High-density layouts, advanced processors, memory devices, power management, thermal considerations, and component availability can all affect production.
Kingda provides One-Stop PCBA Manufacturing covering:
- Engineering Review
- PCB Manufacturing
- Components Sourcing
- SMT Assembly
- DIP Assembly
- Founctional Testing
- Final Inspection
This allows AI hardware teams to work with one manufacturing partner from prototype development through low-volume production.
