Stencil Clamp Force: 5 Checks for a Stable Print
Stencil clamp force is what holds the stencil frame down against the printer table while the squeegee pushes paste across it. If the clamp is loose, the stencil moves a fraction of a millimetre under load, the printed pattern shifts with it, and the fault appears as a placement offset that nobody can find in the placement program.
This guide covers five checks for stencil clamp force and frame condition, the paste bleed and repeatability symptoms that point back to the clamp, and the maintenance intervals that keep the setting stable across a production week.

What the Stencil Clamp Does
The clamp has to hold the frame flat and still while a squeegee applies a lateral load of tens of newtons. It has to do so without distorting the frame, because a frame that is twisted changes the stencil tension pattern and therefore the paste release across the aperture field.
Two failures are common. A clamp that is too loose lets the frame creep under the stroke, and a clamp that is too tight bows the frame and lifts the stencil in the middle of the panel. Both produce pattern errors, and they are distinguished by where on the panel the error appears.

Check 1: Clamp Pressure Across the Frame
Pressure should be even along the whole frame edge, which is checked by placing a strip of pressure-sensitive film or paper between the clamp and the frame and reading the mark afterwards. An uneven mark means one clamp is over-tightened, which bows the frame rather than holding it.
The correct condition is a continuous mark of even width along the frame. Where the mark fades at one corner, that corner is loose and the frame will creep there first. The check should be done after any frame change and at the start of a long run.
Check 2: Stencil Tension at the Aperture Field
Stencil tension is measured with a tension gauge at several points across the mesh, and the readings should be within the band the stencil supplier specifies. A frame that is clamped unevenly shows a tension gradient across the field, which changes paste release and deposit volume from one side of the panel to the other.
Tension should be recorded when the stencil is new and re-checked whenever the deposit pattern becomes uneven. A stencil that has lost tension cannot be corrected by clamping harder; the mesh has to be re-tensioned or the stencil replaced.
Check 3: Paste Bleed Under the Stencil Edge
Paste bleed is the thin film of paste that appears outside the aperture area and along the stencil edge after a print. A small amount at the aperture border is normal, and a wide ribbon that reaches the edge of the stencil indicates that the stencil is not sealed against the board, which the clamp can cause indirectly by twisting the frame.

Check 4: Print Repeatability From Board to Board
Print repeatability is the spread of deposit position across consecutive boards, and it is the most sensitive indicator of a clamp problem. A frame that creeps even slightly shifts the whole pattern, and the shift is caught by the inspection system as a position error rather than a volume error.
The measurement is simple: print ten boards without touching the machine and compare the position of a reference aperture on each. A spread above the machine specification points to the clamp, the frame or the panel support rather than to the printer drives. Our notes on print control cover the recording method.
Check 5: Frame and Clamp Wear
Clamp pads harden and flatten with use, and a hardened pad grips less than a soft one at the same pressure. Frame edges also pick up dents from handling, and a dent becomes a point load that bows the frame instead of a distributed hold.
Both should be inspected at a fixed interval, and the pads should be replaced as a set rather than one at a time so that the pressure stays even. Frame edges that are dented should be stoned flat or the frame replaced, because a damaged edge will never seal uniformly.
Setting the Clamp for Different Frame Types
A tensioned mesh frame, a framed stencil with a glued mesh and a frameless foil each need a different approach. The foil needs a carrier frame with a defined clamp band, and the mesh frame needs the clamps clear of the mesh so that they do not pinch it.
The correct pressure is the lowest one that keeps the frame from moving, and it should be set from the creep test rather than by feel. Where a machine has a pressure display, the value should be written on the setup sheet along with the frame type, so that a change of stencil does not silently change the condition.
Records and Maintenance Intervals
The record should carry the clamp pressure, the frame identification, the tension readings and the date of the last pad change. Those four values make a clamp problem visible in the data rather than in a defect review three weeks later.
A practical interval is a pressure film check at each stencil change, a tension check monthly, and a pad inspection at the preventive maintenance interval. Verification and Records
The environment around the process, including temperature, humidity and cleanliness, sets limits on what the process can hold. A result that cannot be reproduced is not a result, and reproducibility should be demonstrated rather than assumed.
Points to Confirm at First Article
Where an operation cannot be verified afterwards, it has to be controlled during the operation, and that control has to be visible in the record. Where a decision is made by judgement, a boundary sample makes the judgement repeatable between operators and between shifts.
Documented Process Control
Handling between operations is part of the process, and the damage it causes is often attributed to the operation that preceded it. Where the supplier and the user both measure the same property, they should agree on the method before the first delivery.
Inspection and Traceability Notes
Where a requirement can be measured, it should be measured at the point of manufacture and recorded against the board or the lot it applies to. The first article confirms that the setup matches the intent, and it is the cheapest point at which a wrong setup can still be corrected.
FAQ
Can the clamp be too tight? Yes. Excess pressure bows the frame and lifts the stencil in the centre of the panel, which produces a low-volume region in the middle of the print rather than at the edges.
How often should clamp pads be replaced? When the pressure film check shows an uneven mark, or at the interval the machine maker specifies. Replacing them as a set keeps the pressure even along the frame.
Does the clamp affect stencil life? It does. A frame held under an uneven load works the mesh at the corners, and the stencil fails there first. An even clamp is one of the cheapest ways to extend stencil life.
