Plating bath level control is the discipline of keeping a tank at the volume its chemistry was written for, and it is usually treated as an operator housekeeping task. The level decides the concentration of every component in the bath, and that includes the additives that are dosed in millilitres. A litre of water in a large tank is small, but the additive it dilutes is measured in millilitres.

Water leaves a plating tank by evaporation, and it leaves faster when the tank is warm, when the extraction is strong and when the surface is large. What remains behind is everything that was dissolved in it, so a tank that is allowed to fall will concentrate.

Why Bath Level Matters

Every addition made to a plating tank is calculated from the volume, so the volume is a term in every dosing decision. A tank that has lost five per cent of its water will receive an addition that is five per cent too small if the level is not corrected first. The order of the shift routine should therefore be level, then analysis, then additions.

The same applies in reverse when a tank is topped up carelessly. Adding water without mixing or measuring dilutes the bath locally and moves the concentration away from the figure the analysis reported. Water added without mixing will sit on top of a dense bath and give a false reading.

Evaporation and Drag Out

Evaporation removes water alone, which concentrates everything dissolved in it. Make-up water should be deionised, because tap water carries hardness, chloride and organic material that the bath does not want. Concentration control means knowing how much water has been lost and putting back exactly that amount. The reference level should be marked on the tank rather than remembered, and the mark should be re set whenever the bath is made up from scratch. An automatic level system holds the tank within a narrow band and removes the dependence on the operator noticing. The control point should be set so that the tank operates at the level the chemistry assumes, not at whatever is convenient. A system that tops up to a random mark will hold the volume steady and the concentration wrong.
