Effluent Filter Press: Dewatering and Cake Quality
A filter press is the equipment that turns the sludge from a PCB waste treatment plant into a handleable cake. The plates are closed, the conditioned sludge is pumped in, and the water is squeezed out through a filter cloth until only the solids remain. Dewatering is the step that decides the disposal cost of the whole treatment plant, because the solids are what leave the site.
The press is judged on two outputs: how dry the cake comes out and how clear the filtrate is. Both are set by the sludge that is fed to it, so the control starts upstream rather than at the press itself. Effluent that has been treated is judged on its suspended solids, and the press is the last stage that can remove them.

Why Filter Press Control Matters
The cake leaving a filter press is the solid waste that has to be transported and disposed of, and it is charged by weight. A cake that is wet is a cake that is being paid for twice, because most of the extra weight is water. A press is only as good as the sludge it is fed, so the treatment plant upstream sets the ceiling on what it can achieve.
The filtrate matters for a different reason. If solids pass through the cloth they go back to the treatment plant and load it again, so a press that is not filtering properly makes the whole plant work harder. The plates should be checked for wear at the sealing faces, because a worn plate leaks between chambers and produces an uneven cake.
How a Filter Press Dewaters
The press is a stack of recessed plates covered with filter cloth, closed hydraulically and fed from one end. Sludge fills the chambers between the plates, and the pressure behind the feed pushes water through the cloth while the solids build up on it. Conditioning should be done in a tank with a slow stirrer, since a floc that is sheared by a fast mixer will not release water.
Filling, pressing and blowing are separate stages, and each has its own time. The cake builds from the cloth inwards, so the free water has to find its way out along the channels between the two cake faces. The polymer should be made up at the concentration the supplier specifies, because a thick solution is difficult to mix into sludge.
Sludge Conditioning
Sludge that has not been conditioned will blind the cloth and produce a wet cake, because fine particles pass into the weave and seal it. Conditioning with a polymer flocculant binds those fines into larger flocs that release water easily. A fill that is too fast leaves the corners of the chamber empty, which is visible as a soft cake at the plate edges.
The dose has to be matched to the sludge, and it changes with the chemistry of the waste coming in. Over-dosing produces a sticky cake that will not release from the cloth, while under-dosing produces a thin, wet cake and a cloudy filtrate. Cycle Settings and Pressure
Feed pressure should be raised in steps rather than applied all at once, so that the cake forms evenly and the cloth is not forced into the plate grooves. A slow initial fill gives a more uniform cake and a drier result at the end. Cycle time should follow the cake rather than the clock. A press opened too early leaves a wet core, and one left too long wastes pump time without extracting much more water. Cake Quality and What It Shows
A good cake is firm, releases from the cloth cleanly and breaks into blocks rather than smearing. It should not be so wet that water can be squeezed out by hand, and it should not crack and crumble before it is discharged. Samples of the filtrate should be taken at fixed points in the cycle, so that one run can be compared with another.
A wet cake points at conditioning, at fill pressure or at a cloth that is blinding. A cake that sticks to the cloth usually points at an overdose of polymer, or at a sludge that has changed character since the last run. The filtrate normally returns to the treatment plant, so any improvement in clarity reduces the load on everything upstream.
Filtrate Quality
Filtrate should be clear, and the sampling point should be where it can be seen during the fill rather than only at the end. A filtrate that runs cloudy from the start indicates a torn cloth or a plate that is not sealing. Cloths should be inspected on the plate rather than after removal, because damage is easier to locate while it is still fitted.
Cloudy filtrate at the end of the cycle is more often a sign that the cake is nearly complete and fine solids are being pushed through. Cloth Care and Replacement
Filter cloths are consumables, and their condition decides both cake release and filtrate clarity. Cloths should be washed on a defined cycle and inspected for tears, for hardening and for the blinding that comes with fine solids. The press should be washed down after discharge, since dried sludge on the plate faces damages the cloth at the next closure.
A cloth that has hardened, or that has lost its weave pattern, should be replaced rather than cleaned again. Cloths should be kept as a matched set, because a press with cloths of different ages will not drain evenly. Records and Verification
The record should carry the sludge volume, the conditioner dose, the feed pressure profile, the cycle time, the cake weight and the filtrate appearance. Those entries show whether the plant is producing a consistent cake or drifting.
