Solder mask shelf life is the period during which a sealed container of ink can be stored and still perform as it did when it was made. The date on the label is not a formality: the chemistry in the container continues to react slowly, and the properties that printing depends on change with it.

Once the container is opened the clock changes again. What Solder Mask Shelf Life Means

Solder mask is a formulated system of resin, photoinitiators, fillers, solvents and additives, and each of them changes at a different rate. Shelf life is the point at which the slowest of those changes starts to matter to the process.

The result is that an expired ink does not usually fail outright. It prints a little differently, cures a little differently and adheres a little less well, which is far harder to detect than a batch that simply will not work, and that is why the date is checked on receipt and again before mixing.

Ink Storage Temperature and Its Effect

Temperature controls the rate of every reaction in the container, so a store that runs warm can consume months of shelf life in weeks. The specified storage range should be held with a recorded temperature rather than a promise, because a store placed next to a curing oven holds a different temperature in summer.

Cold storage slows the chemistry but brings its own rule: ink taken from a cold store has to reach room temperature before it is opened, or condensation will form inside the container and add water to the formulation. The return to ambient should be timed rather than guessed.

Viscosity Drift Over Time

Viscosity is the property that changes first and is measured most often, and it drifts in both directions. Solvent lost from an open container thickens the ink, while the slow reaction in a sealed one changes the structure that gives the ink its flow behaviour. The change is slow enough to escape notice between shifts.

Because viscosity is measured at a controlled temperature, the reading also depends on how the sample was taken. Pot Life After Opening and Mixing

Pot life is the working period after the container is opened and the ink is mixed. It is shorter than shelf life because the ink is now exposed to air, to the mixing energy and to whatever the shop brings with it, and it depends on the ink, the container size and the shop temperature.

Mixing should be enough to restore uniformity and no more, since excessive shear changes the thixotropic structure. Adding solvent to bring a thick ink back to the printed viscosity is a change to the formulation rather than a correction, and it should be done only within the supplier’s instructions.

Signs That an Ink Has Aged

The early signs are visible before the ink fails. It skins in the container, flows differently on the screen or the spray head, and needs a different setting to produce the same film thickness as the previous batch.

Later signs include poor development, a tacky surface after pre-cure and a film that will not cure to the specified hardness. Any of them should send the batch back to the store rather than to the printer for another adjustment, because a printer who compensates with pressure is treating the symptom.

Effects on Printing and Cure

Printing responds to the flow behaviour of the ink, so a change in viscosity moves the deposit thickness and the definition of the openings, and a small change in flow moves the deposit volume measurably. The record should carry the lot, the shelf life date, the opening date, the storage temperature, the viscosity reading, the exposure and cure settings and the adhesion result. With those fields, a drifting process can be attributed to the material rather than to the equipment, since the dates are the cheapest data in the record.

Rejection rules should be written, with a defined action for ink that has passed its date and for ink that has failed a check.
