Component Substitution Approval

A substitute component is proposed when the original is unavailable, more expensive or discontinued, and the decision is usually made under schedule pressure. The approval is what keeps a procurement decision from becoming a design change without an owner.

Equivalence depends on the function the part performs in the circuit, so the same part can be interchangeable in one design and not in another. That is why the approval belongs with the design owner rather than with purchasing.

What Equivalence Means

Electrical equivalence covers the value, the tolerance, the voltage rating and the temperature coefficient. A capacitor with the same capacitance and a different dielectric is not equivalent at a temperature extreme or at high frequency.

Mechanical equivalence covers the package, the footprint, the height and the termination finish. A part that fits the pads but is taller may interfere with a housing.

Parameters That Are Often Overlooked

The temperature rating, the moisture sensitivity level, the termination finish and the maximum reflow cycles are all easy to miss. Each of them changes the process rather than the function.
