Tack Free Time Control for Conformal Coating: 5 Rules
Tack free is the point at which a coating has dried enough that dust no longer sticks to it and a board can be touched without leaving a mark. It is not the point of full cure. A material can be tack free within minutes and still be far from its final hardness, its final adhesion and its final electrical properties.
Confusing the two is one of the most common mistakes in coating processes. A board that is handled, stacked or tested at tack free rather than at full cure can be marked, can trap contamination and can bond poorly to anything applied later.

What Tack Free Really Means
Tack free describes the surface, not the bulk. Solvent leaves the surface first, so the top layer gels and stops being sticky long before the material near the components has released its solvent or completed its reaction.
The consequence is a coating that looks finished while the material under the components is still mobile. Where that material later shrinks, it pulls away from a lead or a joint and leaves a gap that moisture can follow.
The correct interpretation is therefore a handling milestone rather than a cure milestone. It tells the operator when the board can move without being damaged, and it says nothing about whether the coating has reached the properties the design assumed.
Why Tack Free Time Varies
Temperature is the largest single influence. A board that leaves the oven warm reaches tack free in a fraction of the time taken by one that has cooled, and a shop that changes the conveyor speed changes the tack free time of every board on the line.
Thickness has the second largest effect. A heavy coating holds more solvent and takes longer to skin over, so a board coated at the top of its thickness tolerance will still be sticky when a thinner board is ready to handle.
Humidity and airflow matter as well. A material that cures by reacting with moisture in the air needs a certain humidity to progress, while a solvent-borne coating needs airflow to carry the solvent away. A closed room, or one that is too dry, can leave a coating tacky far longer than the specification suggests.
Measuring Tack Free Time on the Line
The practical test is a touch or a wipe. A gloved finger pressed lightly onto a coated and cooled area should leave no mark and no drag, and a lint-free swab should come away clean.
For repeatability the test is done on the same area of the same reference board, at the same temperature, by the trained operator, and the result is timed from the moment the board leaves the oven. Written that way it becomes a process parameter rather than an opinion.

Shadow Areas and Partial Cure
A shadow area is any part of the board that a curing lamp or an airflow path cannot reach, such as the space under a component body or beside a tall connector. Coating there stays wetter and reaches tack free later than the exposed surfaces.
The usual answer is a dual-cure material, in which the shadowed regions finish curing by moisture or by heat after the light has done its work. That secondary cure is slower, so the true handling point for the whole board is set by the shadow rather than by the surface.
Where the coating is applied by spray, the shadowed area may also be thinner, which makes the secondary cure more important rather than less. Handling, Rework and Board Stacking
A board that is tack free but not fully cured is vulnerable to pressure. Stacking boards, resting one on a component, or placing a board in a transport tray before the coating has hardened leaves marks that no later inspection can remove.
Rework is the same problem in a different form. Solvent from a repair, or heat from a soldering iron, softens a coating that has not finished curing and can lift it well beyond the repair area. The interval before rework is allowed should be stated in the process.

Records and Change Control
The record for a coating line should include the oven or lamp settings, the measured tack free time, the board temperature at the test and the ambient conditions. That combination is what makes a result reproducible on another shift.
Changes to the material batch, the application method, the number of coats or the conveyor speed should each trigger a new tack free measurement and a new full-cure check. Neither measurement replaces the other.
Where a customer specification quotes a cure schedule, the shop still has to demonstrate that its own line reaches the required state, because the schedule describes the material and not the equipment that applies it.
Coating Line Qualification
A conformal coating line is qualified by running boards that represent the worst case rather than the easiest one. Tall components, narrow gaps, connector bodies and board edges all change the local thickness and the local cure, and a flat coupon cannot show any of it.
The qualification should record the tack free time and the full cure state for each of the critical areas, not just for the top surface. Where a dual-cure material is used, the secondary cure is verified after the specified waiting period.
Equipment drift is the reason the qualification is repeated. Lamp output falls, nozzles wear, oven airflow changes and conveyor speed varies, and each of those moves the cure state without any change to the recipe.
Requalification triggers should be written down: a new material batch, a change of nozzle or lamp, a change in the number of coats, or a repair to the oven. Each of them invalidates the previous cure evidence.

FAQ
Can a board be tested electrically once it is tack free? Handling is usually acceptable at that point, but probing, clamping or flexing the board is not. The safe rule is that electrical test waits for full cure unless the coating and the fixture have been qualified for an earlier touch.
Why is one area of the board still sticky after the others are dry? Almost always because it is a shadow area, thicker than the rest, or shielded from airflow. Checking the coating thickness at that point separates the three causes.
Does a longer cure always mean a better coating? No. Beyond the specified schedule the material can become brittle, and some chemistries continue to cross-link until they crack under thermal cycling. The cure window has an upper limit as well as a lower one.
