Artwork storage is treated as filing, yet the film in the drawer defines every pattern the shop produces. Film changes dimension with temperature and humidity, loses density with age and picks up scratches from careless handling. When registration drifts or line widths shift, the artwork is often the last item checked and the first place the answer was hiding.

Why Film Condition Affects the Printed Pattern

Film is a plastic carrier with an emulsion, and both respond to their environment.

Large panels amplify every dimensional change, because a small percentage change becomes a measurable distance across a long span. That is why artwork for a large backplane deserves tighter storage discipline than film for a small, densely patterned board.

Humidity changes the base dimensions, which shifts registration across a large panel, while temperature changes dry the film and make it brittle. Density falls gradually with age and exposure to light.

Those effects are small individually but they add up with the errors from lamination, exposure and etch. Registration accuracy depends on every contributor being under control, and artwork is the one that is easiest to keep stable.

Registration targets printed on the film are affected in the same way as the pattern, which is why a fringe pattern that suddenly shows an offset should trigger a film measurement before any exposure adjustment is made.

Storage Environment and Film Density Control

Store film in a cool, dry, dark cabinet with stable conditions, typically near 20 degrees Celsius and moderate humidity.

Keep the cabinet closed and away from loading doors, forklift routes and ovens, since a cabinet in a busy aisle sees the same conditions as the room around it. A simple recording thermometer inside the cabinet shows whether it is actually buffering the environment or merely containing the film.

Fluctuating conditions cause the film to grow and shrink repeatedly, and repeated cycling is worse for dimensional stability than a slightly imperfect constant condition.

Film density control also depends on light exposure. Even short exposure to strong light fades the emulsion gradually, so keep artwork in sleeves and in a closed cabinet rather than on top of the exposure unit where it is convenient.

Artwork Dimensional Stability and Master Copies

Artwork dimensional stability is best protected by keeping the master separate from working copies. The master stays in storage and is used only to generate copies, while the working film carries the wear of daily production.

Record the master dimensions when it is created, and re-measure periodically with the same method. A master that has moved is a serious event, because every copy made from it inherits the error across an unknown number of jobs.

Measure the master with the same instrument and at the same temperature each time, and record the values. Comparing a measurement taken on a cold morning with one taken in a warm afternoon room will otherwise produce an apparent shift that has nothing to do with the film.

Handling and Sleeving Practice

Handle film by the edges with clean gloves, and never lay it on a bench where tools or panels sit. A single scratch in a dense area of the pattern becomes a repeating defect that inspectors learn to ignore, which is worse than a defect they report.

Sleeves should be clean, flat and free of dust, and they should be replaced when they become marked. Storing film loose in a drawer is the fastest way to accumulate scratches and creases that no amount of careful exposure can compensate for.

Provide a flat drawer or a vertical file sized for the largest film used, and never fold artwork to make it fit. A crease through a dense pattern produces a permanent line defect on every panel made from that copy.

Inspection and Rejection Criteria

Label each copy with its creation date and the master it came from, so a defect traced to a copy can be tied to a specific production period. That traceability shortens investigations considerably.

When a copy is retired, record the reason: damage, density loss or revision change. The pattern of reasons over a year shows whether the storage environment is adequate or whether the copies are being handled too roughly at the exposure unit.

Film Handling in Exposure and Return

How film is handled at the exposure unit matters as much as storage. Film left on the frame, folded into a drawer or placed under a panel will pick up damage within days, and the pattern of that damage tells the story later.

Provide a dedicated return location and inspect film when it is returned, not only when it is issued. A quick check at return catches damage while the shift is still running and the cause can still be identified.

Where the same copy is used for several products, label it clearly and store it back in its own sleeve rather than in a general pile. Mixing film from different products in one drawer is a reliable way to expose a panel with the wrong pattern.

Records, Inventory and Disposal

Keep records of master creation, copies made, inspection results and disposal. Old artwork accumulates quickly, and keeping film that no longer matches a current revision invites the classic error of exposing with the wrong version.
