PCB and PCB Manufacturing: A Complete Guide to Printed Circuit Board Basics, Structure, and Technology

In the complex world of modern electronic devices, the printed circuit board, or PCB, is like an unsung hero. Although it is not eye-catching, it plays a vital foundational role. From tiny smartphones to massive supercomputers, from everyday home appliances to advanced aerospace equipment, PCB connects various electronic components in its unique way, providing a stable and reliable channel for electronic signal transmission. This enables electronic devices to operate accurately and efficiently, profoundly changing our way of life and work, and becoming an indispensable key link in the development of modern electronic technology.

I. Basic Concepts and Development History of PCB

PCB is a board-like structure that forms conductive circuits and patterns on an insulating substrate through printing, etching, and other processes, used to assemble and connect electronic components. Its main purpose is to provide mechanical support for electronic components and realize electrical connections between them, thereby building a complete electronic circuit system.

The development of PCB can be traced back to the early 20th century. At that time, electronic devices were relatively simple, and wiring mainly relied on point-to-point manual connection. This method was inefficient and error-prone, limiting the mass production and performance improvement of electronic devices. With the continuous development of electronic technology, the demand for reliability, miniaturization, and automated production of circuit connections became increasingly urgent, and PCB technology emerged.

Early PCB used a simple single-sided design, with conductive circuits on only one side and components installed through holes. It was mainly used in simple consumer electronics such as radios and televisions. Subsequently, double-sided boards gradually appeared, realizing connection between circuits on both sides through vias, greatly increasing wiring flexibility and circuit complexity. This further improved the performance of electronic devices and was widely used in computers, communication equipment, and other fields.

With the rapid progress of electronic technology, electronic products are developing toward miniaturization, multi-functionality, and high performance, and multilayer PCB has become mainstream. Multilayer PCB, by alternately laying conductive layers between insulating layers, can realize more complex circuit layouts in limited space, meeting the requirements of modern electronic products for high-density wiring and high-speed signal transmission. Today, PCB technology is highly mature. It not only continues to break through limits in layers, line width, and spacing, but also has achieved tremendous innovation in materials, manufacturing processes, and design methods, providing solid support for the prosperity and development of the electronics industry.

II. Structure and Composition of PCB

A typical PCB is mainly composed of the following parts.

1. Insulating Substrate

The insulating substrate is the basic supporting material of PCB, usually made of composite materials such as glass fiber reinforced epoxy resin, or FR-4. FR-4 has good insulation performance, mechanical strength, heat resistance, and chemical stability. It can withstand the high temperature and mechanical stress during the installation and soldering of electronic components, while ensuring electrical insulation between circuits and preventing short circuits. In addition to FR-4, there are other special-purpose insulating substrate materials, such as polyimide, or PI, for PCB in high-temperature environments, and ceramic substrates for high-power and high-frequency circuits. These materials can meet the special requirements of different application scenarios for PCB performance.

2. Conductive Circuits

Conductive circuits are the core component of PCB, used to realize electrical connections between electronic components. Copper foil is usually used as the conductive material, and the designed circuit pattern is transferred to the insulating substrate through photolithography, etching, and other processes. Copper foil has good electrical and thermal conductivity, ensuring efficient transmission of electronic signals and heat dissipation. With the development of electronic technology, the requirements for the precision and performance of conductive circuits are getting higher and higher. Line width and spacing continue to shrink, gradually decreasing from the initial millimeter level to the micrometer level and even the nanometer level, to meet the needs of high-density wiring and high-speed signal transmission. At the same time, in order to improve the corrosion resistance and solderability of the circuits, the copper foil surface is usually treated with tin plating, gold plating, nickel plating, and so on.

3. Vias

Vias are important structures used to connect conductive circuits on different layers of PCB. When PCB is designed as a multilayer board, vias act like vertical bridges, allowing signals to be transmitted between different layers. The production process of vias includes drilling and metallization. First, holes of a certain diameter are drilled in the insulating substrate. Then, a layer of metal, usually copper, is deposited on the hole walls by chemical plating or electroplating to make them conductive. The size, shape, and layout of vias affect the electrical performance and manufacturing process difficulty of PCB. In PCB design, reasonable planning and optimization are required according to signal transmission requirements and manufacturing process limitations.

4. Pads

Pads are the areas on PCB used for soldering electronic component pins. They are usually circular, square, or oval in shape, and their size and spacing depend on the component package form and pin spacing. The pad surface is generally treated to ensure good solderability, so that electronic components can be firmly soldered on the PCB, achieving reliable electrical connection and mechanical fixation. In surface mount technology, or SMT, pad design is particularly important. It directly affects the placement accuracy and soldering quality of components and plays a key role in ensuring the performance and reliability of electronic products.

5. Solder Mask

The solder mask is a layer of insulating material covering the areas of PCB outside the conductive circuits and pads. It is usually green, blue, red, or other colors. Its main function is to prevent solder from flowing to unnecessary places during soldering, causing short circuits and other problems. It also protects conductive circuits from external environmental erosion. The solder mask usually has component numbers, symbols, circuit identification, and other information printed on it, facilitating PCB assembly, debugging, and repair.

6. Silkscreen Layer

The silkscreen layer is located on the outermost layer of PCB. It is mainly used to print component identification, model, parameters, polarity, and other information, as well as PCB version number, production date, manufacturer, and other production identifications. The existence of the silkscreen layer enables electronic engineers and technicians to easily identify various components and circuits on PCB, facilitating the assembly, debugging, and repair of electronic equipment, and improving production and maintenance efficiency.

III. Classification and Characteristics of PCB

According to different classification standards, PCB can be divided into many types, each with its unique characteristics and scope of application.

1. Classification by Number of Layers

Single-sided board: conductive circuits on only one side. Components are mainly installed on the side with circuits through holes, and the other side is used for placing components and as mechanical support. Single-sided boards have a simple structure and low cost and are suitable for simple circuit designs, such as some small consumer electronics and toys.

Double-sided board: conductive circuits on both sides, with connection between the two sides through vias. Compared with single-sided boards, double-sided boards increase wiring flexibility and can realize more complex circuit functions. They are widely used in computer motherboards, industrial control boards, communication equipment, and other fields.

Multilayer board: has three or more conductive layers. By alternately laying insulating layers and conductive layers and using vias to realize electrical connections between layers, multilayer boards can achieve high-density wiring in limited space. They meet the needs of modern electronic products for miniaturization, high performance, and multi-functionality and are often used in complex electronic systems such as high-end smartphones, servers, medical equipment, and aerospace electronic equipment.

2. Classification by Material

IV. PCB Manufacturing Process

The PCB manufacturing process is a complex and delicate process involving multiple steps and technologies. The following are its main manufacturing process flows.

1. Design Stage

In the early stage of PCB manufacturing, circuit design and layout design are required. Circuit design engineers use professional electronic design automation, or EDA, software to draw circuit schematics according to the functional requirements of electronic equipment and determine the connection relationships and electrical parameters between various electronic components. Then, layout design engineers convert the circuit schematic into the physical layout of PCB, determining detailed information such as component placement, wiring routing, via positions, and pad sizes. In the layout design process, many factors need to be considered, such as the number of PCB layers, line width and spacing, signal integrity, power integrity, and heat dissipation. Through repeated optimization and simulation, it ensures that the designed PCB can meet the performance requirements of electronic equipment and has good manufacturability and reliability.

2. Substrate Preparation

According to design requirements, select appropriate insulating substrate materials such as FR-4 and PI, and cut them into the required size and shape. Then, perform surface treatment on the substrate, usually including cleaning, grinding, and chemical treatment, to remove oil, impurities, and oxides on the surface, improve the adhesion between the substrate and the subsequently deposited metal layer, and ensure the quality and reliability of conductive circuits.

3. Conductive Layer Deposition

Deposit a thin layer of copper foil on the insulating substrate as the basis for conductive circuits. There are currently two commonly used methods. One is chemical copper plating, which uses chemical reactions to deposit a uniform copper layer on the substrate surface. The other is electroplating copper, which uses current to further deposit copper ions on the surface of the existing thin copper layer, increasing the thickness of the copper layer to meet conductive performance requirements. The thickness of the deposited copper foil is usually determined according to PCB design requirements, generally between a few micrometers and dozens of micrometers.

4. Photolithography and Etching

Photolithography is a key step in transferring the designed PCB circuit pattern to the copper foil surface. First, coat a layer of photoresist on the copper foil surface. Then, through an exposure machine, irradiate the designed circuit pattern onto the photoresist through a photomask, causing the photoresist in the exposed area to undergo a chemical reaction and change its properties. Next, use developer to dissolve the unexposed photoresist, exposing the copper foil area to be etched. The etching process uses chemical solutions such as ferric chloride solution and acidic copper chloride solution to corrode the exposed copper foil, leaving conductive circuits consistent with the design pattern. After etching, remove the remaining photoresist through a stripping process to complete the production of conductive circuits. The precision of photolithography and etching processes directly affects the line width, spacing, and shape precision of PCB conductive circuits and is an important link determining PCB performance and quality. With the development of electronic technology, the precision requirements for photolithography and etching processes are also getting higher and higher.

5. Drilling and Metallization

For multilayer PCB, vias used to connect conductive circuits on different layers need to be drilled in the insulating substrate. Drilling usually uses CNC drilling machines to accurately drill according to the designed via positions and sizes. After drilling, the hole walls need to be metallized to make the vias conductive. A common metallization method is chemical copper plating, which deposits a uniform copper layer on the hole walls through a series of chemical reactions, and then electroplating copper is performed to increase the thickness of the copper layer, ensuring good conductivity of the vias and reliable connection of conductive circuits on different layers to realize signal transmission.

6. Surface Treatment

In order to improve the solderability, corrosion resistance, and electrical performance of PCB conductive circuits and pads, surface treatment is required. Common surface treatment methods include the following.

Hot air solder leveling, or HASL: immerse PCB in molten tin-lead alloy, then use hot air to blow off excess solder, covering the pad surface with a uniform tin-lead alloy layer. It has good solderability, but flatness is relatively poor, and the use of lead causes certain environmental pollution. It is gradually being replaced by other lead-free surface treatment processes.

Organic solderability preservative, or OSP: forms a thin organic protective film on the PCB copper surface. It can prevent copper oxidation and ensure good wetting between solder and copper surface during soldering. It has the advantages of low cost, good flatness, and lead-free environmental protection. However, the number of soldering times the protective film can withstand is relatively limited. It is often used for PCB with high solderability requirements and fewer soldering times.

Electroless nickel immersion gold, or ENIG: first deposit a nickel layer on the PCB copper surface by chemical plating, then immerse in gold solution to replace a thin gold layer on the surface. ENIG has good solderability, corrosion resistance, and contact performance, and its appearance is flat and beautiful. It is often used for PCB with high requirements for electrical performance and reliability, such as mobile phone motherboards and computer graphics cards. However, the cost is relatively high, and the gold layer is thin. During long-term use, contact failure caused by gold layer wear may occur.

Electroless nickel electroless palladium immersion gold, or ENEPIG: on the basis of ENIG, a palladium layer is added between the nickel layer and the gold layer, further improving the stability and reliability of surface treatment. It is especially suitable for high-end electronic product PCB with extremely high requirements for soldering reliability and long-term stability. However, the process is more complex and the cost is higher.

7. Solder Mask and Silkscreen

After completing conductive circuits and surface treatment, coat the PCB with a solder mask. Through methods such as screen printing or exposure and development, accurately cover the solder mask material on areas other than pads and vias to prevent solder overflow and short circuits during soldering. Then, print the silkscreen layer on the PCB surface. Through screen printing technology, print component identification, model, parameters, polarity, and PCB version number, production date, and other information in corresponding positions to facilitate subsequent assembly, debugging, and repair work.

8. Electrical Testing and Inspection

After PCB manufacturing is completed, comprehensive electrical testing and quality inspection are required to ensure that PCB performance meets design requirements and quality standards. Electrical testing mainly includes open circuit testing, short circuit testing, resistance testing, capacitance testing, inductance testing, and signal integrity testing. Through professional testing equipment, various circuit networks and signal paths on PCB are detected to find and eliminate possible electrical connection defects, short circuits, open circuits, parameter deviations, and other problems. Quality inspection includes appearance inspection, dimension measurement, coating thickness detection, and solderability testing. It checks whether the PCB appearance has scratches, defects, or deformation, whether dimensions meet design requirements, whether coating thickness is uniform and up to standard, and whether pad solderability is good. Only PCB that passes strict testing and inspection can enter the next stage of electronic component assembly, ensuring the quality and reliability of the final electronic product.
