Artwork Film Control: 5 Checks Before Imaging
Artwork film is the transparent master from which a panel is imaged, and it remains in use for outer layers, solder mask and legend on lines that have not moved to direct imaging. Because the film is a physical object, it changes with temperature and humidity, and those changes are transferred to every panel imaged through it.
Controlling an artwork film means controlling its dimensions, its density and its cleanliness. Each of those fails quietly: a film that has grown by a few parts per million still produces images, but the registration between layers drifts and the accumulated error appears as an off-centre annular ring on the finished board.

What Artwork Film Still Does in Fabrication
The film carries the pattern for the layer it represents, and it is placed in contact with the resist during exposure so that light passes only where the pattern is clear. Contact pressure matters too, because a film that is held slightly away from the resist allows light to spread under the pattern edge. The width of the clear and dark areas therefore sets the feature size, and any change in those dimensions is a change in the product.
Films are also the archive of a design. A board that was built years ago can be re-imaged from its film, provided the film has been stored in conditions that preserved its dimensional stability. Where the archive has been scanned and reprinted without measuring, the reprint carries the errors of both the scanner and the printer.
Dimensional Stability and Humidity
Polyester artwork film absorbs moisture from the air and expands as it does so. The change is small in absolute terms and significant in registration: a film held in a humid room can grow enough over a shift to move a feature at the panel corner by more than the registration tolerance allows.
The practical control is to condition the film in the same environment as the imaging area before it is used, and to measure a reference pattern on the film rather than assuming its nominal size. Films should be kept in their sleeves when they are not in use, because a film left on an open bench takes on the room conditions within minutes. Where the imaging area is air conditioned and the storage area is not, the film needs time to settle after it is brought in.
The Photoplot Process and Film Density
A photoplot writes the pattern onto the artwork film with a light source, and its output depends on focus, exposure and processing. Density is what matters next: an area that should be opaque has to block light completely, and an area that should be clear has to transmit it fully.
Low density in a dark area leaks light into the resist, which produces a thin resist wall or a partially exposed region that develops badly. Low transmission in a clear area holds light back, which produces an under-exposed feature. Density is checked with a densitometer against the values the photoplot process was set up to deliver. Both faults look like exposure problems on the panel and are really photoplot faults on the film.
Registration Marks and Their Use
Registration marks allow the film to be aligned with the panel and with the other layers. They are usually placed outside the working area, with a target that can be read by eye on a light table or by an automatic alignment system in the exposure unit.
The marks should also be used for measurement, not only for alignment. Reading a fixed distance between two marks on the film, and comparing it with the nominal value, detects dimensional growth before the film is put on a panel. That single check turns a hidden variable into a recorded number, and it relates directly to the layer-to-layer budget described in layer to layer registration.
Film Handling, Storage and Cleanliness
Artwork film scratches easily, and a scratch in a dark area becomes a clear line that prints onto every panel. Handling should be by the edges, with gloves, and films should be stored flat in sleeves rather than rolled or stacked under weight. A film that has been rolled takes a set and will not lie flat against the resist, which produces soft edges on every image it makes.
Cleanliness matters for the same reason. Dust on a film blocks light and leaves an unexposed spot that may be too small to see on the panel and large enough to fail an electrical test. Cleaning is done with a soft brush and a suitable solution, and a film that has been cleaned repeatedly should be inspected for scratches before it is reused.
Artwork Film Versus Direct Imaging
Direct imaging removes the film from the process and writes the pattern onto the resist with a laser. That eliminates dimensional stability as a variable and reduces the number of handling steps, which is why fine line production has largely moved in that direction, as described in laser direct imaging.

Inspection: Measuring a Film Before Use
Inspection starts on a light table with a visual check for scratches, pinholes and density faults, followed by a measurement of the registration marks. Where a film is used for a fine line layer, a test exposure on a coupon confirms that the film and the resist together produce the target feature.

Records and Dimensional Drift
The record for an artwork film should carry its revision, its measured marks, the date of the measurement and the storage location. Measuring the same film at intervals shows whether it is drifting, and a film that drifts is usually one that is being stored or handled badly rather than one that is worn out.
When a registration defect appears, the measurement history is what allows the cause to be attributed correctly. A film that has grown, a printer that is out of calibration and a panel that has changed size all produce similar symptoms, and only the records separate them. FAQ
How often should artwork film be measured? At least when it is issued, and then at intervals that follow how often it is used. A film that runs daily deserves a periodic measurement; one that is stored and used twice a year needs a check before each use.
Can a scratched artwork film be repaired? A small clear area can sometimes be opaqued, but the repair changes the density and must be measured afterwards. A scratch that crosses a fine feature usually means the film should be re-plotted.
Why does registration drift during a humid week? Because the film grows as it absorbs moisture, and the growth is larger across a large panel than the tolerance allows. Conditioning the film in the imaging area before use removes most of the effect.
